having trouble snagging a girl because, well, let’s face it, you aren’t that attractive? Then you may want to try this out.

Not every guy looks like Brad Pitt, and some dudes can easily be socially awkward, so how can one stop himself from getting swiped left so quickly in the dating world these days? You must play up your, wait for it, creativity.

A new study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science suggests that men appear more attractive to women if they talk up their creative side. Researchers looked at how creativity might affect a person’s attractiveness, and their findings are super interesting and helpful. They showed a group of volunteers photos of both men and women and had them rate each face purely on attractiveness. With the hot-or-not scale in place, they then showed the same group of photos to the second crew of volunteers, but this time they added a little info to each image that gave clues as to whether the person in the photo might have a cool, creative personality. The volunteers then rated attractiveness based on their overall impression.

Result? Average-looking guys become more enticing when women perceived them as more creative. In fact, the effect was so strong that they were rated just as attractive as the most Ryan Gosling-esque men in the bunch. What wasn’t surprising was the fact that the men perceived as both physically attractive and creative were rated the most alluring of all. Lucky bastards.

What causes women to think this way? According to the researchers, these findings might have something to do with evolutionary biology. “Creativity is thought to be a signal that an individual can invest time and effort into a particular task or can see things in novel ways that may be useful for survival,” study author Christopher Watkins, Ph.D., told MedicalXpress.

Oddly enough, the study found that women experienced the opposite effect. Average-looking women with a good imagination and creativity were perceived as less attractive than average-looking dull women to men, suggesting that they still rank looks as most important when assessing the attractiveness of females. Shocking, right?

So what’s the takeway? Don’t freak out if you aren’t the hottest guy around. The next time you’re writing a profile for a new dating site or trying to pick up the pretty chick at the bar, let your creativity fly! That’s apparently what will really catch her eye. Hey, if David Spade can get regularly laid, there’s hope for all of us, right?
